Rumours Of Dental School Closure Incorrect

Thu, 26 Mar 2009

Speculation that the dental school at Liverpool University may be forced to close has been rubbished by the department’s head.

Recent media reports suggested that up to eight of the university's departments – including dentistry – were being axed following disappointing RAE results.

Newspapers reported that leaked internal documents revealed that three departments were in need of urgent review after they were judged to have no world-leading research activity.

"It is the view of the senior management team and the deans that, given the need to invest in excellence, it is not feasible to continue to support these areas in future," the document said

But Professor Callum Youngson, head of the university’s dentistry department, said he was "happy to confirm" that the speculation regarding the closure of the department was "completely incorrect".

"We have already been reviewed and I can confirm that the dental school will remain with teaching and research as its core business," he said.
