Disgraced Dentist Suspended For Four Months

Thu, 06 Aug 2009

A Manchester dentist who had a nine-year affair with his nurse has been suspended from practice for four months by the General Dental Council (GDC).

At a GDC hearing, it was heard how dentist Tariq Drabu, 44, intimately touched his dental nurse during patients’ appointments and how he also questioned a sedated patient about sexual experiences.

The GDC panel found his conduct was unprofessional, inappropriate and not in the best interests of patients, and handed him a four month suspension.

Mr Drabu’s future at the Manchester Dental Hospital, where he works one day a week training dentists, will also be reviewed by bosses.

Chair of the GDC hearing, Barbara Duffner, told him: "Whilst you had a patient in the dental chair, on a number of occasions you engaged in inappropriate sexual behaviour with the same nurse ."

"The Committee had no doubt in deciding that such conduct betrayed your profession and was plainly not in the best interest of your patients and was such that it could have brought the profession into disrepute."

The Committee also heard that in September 2002, a patient was asked by Mr Drabu and/or his dental nurse about her "sexual experiences" while having two teeth removed under sedation.

It was revealed that the highly respected dentist repeatedly stated the name of the patient’s first sexual partner when she came to the practice to pick up some medicine .

Earlier this week, Mr Drabu admitted at an employment tribunal that he forced nurse Paula Jackson to leave her job managing Langley Dental Group, in Middleton, after his psychiatrist wife discovered their secret long-term relationship.

At the tribunal hearing, 45-year-old Mrs Jackson, from Rochdale, said Mr Drabu offered her £26,000 to quit before upping his offer to £100,000 if she resigned and also left her husband of 27 years.

The mum-of-two won her claim for constructive dismissal against the Langley Dental Group and its owner, Mr Drabu, and is now expected to receive five-figure compensation .
