Over 90 Per Cent Of Brits Suffer From Dental Anxiety

Thu, 18 Sep 2008

More than 90 per cent of the UK population are scared of visiting the dentist, new research has found.

A survey of more than 1,500 dental patients carried out by the Cosmetic Dentistry Guide also revealed that when it comes to trips to the dentist men are more scared than women and less likely to confront their fears.

Dr Kalpesh Bohara, a member of the Cosmetic Dentistry Guide advisory panel, said: "Everyone knows that some people are scared of visiting the dentist but I don't think anyone realises the true extent of the problem."

"I would say it is the main cause of dental problems in the UK today," added the dental anxiety expert.

Another member of the dental treatment advice website, Dr Kailesh Solanki, claimed scared patients are hiding behind excuses to avoid sorting out their smiles.

"People like to blame a lack of NHS dentists or high private costs for their avoidance of dental care rather than admit that they are simply too scared," he said.

The survey, of 1,586 patients at Dr Solanki's Kissdental clinic, also showed that men are more scared than women, and less likely to confront their fears.

Commenting on the findings with regards to gender, Dr Solanki said: "Men are definitely more scared. The difference is that women might be worried too but take more pride in their appearance and are willing to accept the 'pain' for the gain."

"But people have nothing to fear," he added. A trip to the dentist can be like a relaxing spa treatment . What’s there to be scared of?"
