Companies Refuse To Implement Expensive Dental Health Plans

Thu, 03 Apr 2008

Employees across the UK are being denied dental health care plans, despite bosses being fully aware of their staff’s desire for such benefits, according to new research.

A survey of 321 UK businesses revealed that 65 per cent believe their members of staff would value dental care contributions more than any other healthcare benefits .

However, the poll also found that 67 per cent of companies would refuse to implement them because they're considered as ‘too expensive'.

The research is part of health plan provider HSA's ‘Annual Dental Survey 2008’, which discovered that a quarter of Brits believe that the cost of oral care has become unaffordable and that dentists are receiving 500,000 fewer patients compared with two years ago.

Richard Halley, Head of B2B Sales at HSA, commented: "By dismissing dental benefits companies could be letting their employees and themselves down."

"Especially since over a quarter of working people surveyed as part of our consumer survey claimed that looking after dental benefits was unaffordable, and 42 per cent thought they could do more to look after their oral health ."

He added: "This could impact recruitment and retention as dental benefits could really attract employees . Additionally, if working people are putting off visiting the dentist due to cost, this could result in their oral health worsening, which could affect sickness absence."

Halley said that that some 40 per cent of those surveyed said they believed that the state of NHS dentistry was so poor "it would disappear in the future" and that such a collapse would lead to all people taking up the option of private dental insurance .
